Resource - Sound

The Sound Resource in Total Launcher serves as a centralized directory for managing audio files utilized within a layout design. Assigning sounds to specific user interactions provides tactile audio feedback, supports accessibility, and creates a cohesive, themed user experience across the interface.

Usefulness of Sound Resources

Incorporating sound into a layout extends the interface beyond visual elements.

  • Feedback: - Provides immediate auditory confirmation when an object is pressed or swiped.
  • Alerts: - Functions as an indicator for specific Launcher events or automated task completions.
  • Theming: - Integrates custom UI chimes, clicks, or effects that match the visual aesthetic of the layout.

Accessing the Sound Resource

To locate the Sound Resource directory within the Launcher configuration:

  1. Enter Edit Mode > Launcher options
  2. Select Resources.
  3. Navigate to the Sound tab located in the resource category header.

Adding Sound Files and Compatibility

The Launcher relies on standard Android media capabilities to process and play sounds. To ensure reliable playback, utilize standard audio file formats natively supported by the operating system.

  • Compatible formats: - Use standard formats such as mp3, ogg, and wav.
  • Adding a file: - Tap the + icon within the Sound tab to invoke the system file picker.
  • Selecting the file: - Browse the local device storage and select the desired audio track to import it into the Launcher's resource directory.

Assigning a Sound to an Action

Audio files must be bound to object behaviors to trigger playback during regular Launcher usage.

  1. Enable Edit Mode.
  2. Long-press the target object on the screen to reveal the Object Design menu.
  3. Select the Action Action icon icon to access object properties.
  4. Navigate to the type of action and select a trigger event to assign the action to.
    1. Common triggers include Tap, Swipe up, or Swipe down.
    2. Choose the Sound action from the available action list to open the Resource - Sound dialog.
    3. Select the specific audio file from the previously populated Sound Resource directory.

Design Considerations and Limitations

When implementing sound in a custom layout, adhere to several technical and design constraints to maintain optimal performance.

  • File Size: - Limit audio files to extremely short sound bites (e.g., UI clicks, short chimes). Large audio files consume active memory, increase the layout's backup file size, and may delay Launcher loading times.
  • Format Efficiency: - Utilize compressed formats such as ogg for UI sounds to minimize the overall storage footprint while maintaining audio quality.

System Volume: - Playback volume is strictly controlled by the Android system's media or notification volume levels. While the Launcher lacks native, independent volume-control sliders for individual layout sounds, playback volume can be managed dynamically using an Action Sequence.

  1. Add an Action Sequence to the object trigger (instead of Sound)
  2. Insert a Medial volume level adjustment action to establish the desired playback level.
  3. Insert the Sound action to execute the audio file.
  4. Insert a Delay action equivalent to the duration of the audio file to ensure playback completes uninterrupted.
  5. Insert a final volume adjustment action to restore the original system volume state.
  • Overlap and Concurrency: - Triggering multiple sound actions simultaneously or in rapid succession may cause audio overlap or abrupt cut-offs, depending entirely on the device's hardware audio processing capabilities.
