Total Launcher UI & Animation: Mastering Wallpapers, Blurs, Edge Drawers, HUDs, and Page Transitions

The UI & Animation configuration menu governs the global visual environment and motion dynamics across Total Launcher. While object layouts dictate the spatial positioning of individual widgets and application icons, these system-level controls manage background wallpaper rendering, real-time Gaussian blurs, multi-page 3D transition curves, and immersive status/navigation bar overlays. Fine-tuning these environmental parameters ensures smooth, cohesive themes that maximize aesthetic fidelity while maintaining full responsiveness alongside native Android system gestures. The setup workflow begins by accessing the primary interface categories within the central Launcher settings.

Overview & Location

The UI & Animation configuration menu controls the visual environment, system bar overlays, and transition animations across three primary feature sets: User Interface, Page Transitions, and Sliding Drawers.

Primary Configuration Areas

  • Wallpaper Management: Controls whether wallpaper is drawn by the Android system or rendered by Total Launcher to unlock per-page wallpapers, live blurs, and daily cycling.
  • Window & Folder Overlays: Configures modal dimming, background blur shaders, touch-through layering, and Z-index behavior for overlay windows.
  • System UI & Android Bars: Manages transparency overlays, dark status icons, and fullscreen immersive hiding for the status and navigation bars.
  • Page Transitions: Configures 3D transition curves, transition speeds, and boundary frames between home screen pages
  • Sliding Drawers: Sets up 4-edge off-canvas containers, erase-behind layers, and edge gesture triggers.

UI & Animation Menu Overview

Wallpaper Modes & Behavior

Total Launcher features three distinct engine modes for handling background wallpaper rendering:

Mode Engine Behavior Capabilities & Limitations
No wallpaper Launcher wallpaper engine is deactivated. The background displays solid black or pure transparency. Best used when individual pages supply custom image objects or dedicated page backgrounds.
System wallpaper Renders the shared wallpaper set by Android OS settings. Conserves device RAM and matches lock screen wallpapers. Does not support individual per-page backgrounds or real-time Launcher blur shaders.
App wallpaper Total Launcher takes direct control of background rendering. Full Feature Set: Unlocks dynamic per-page wallpapers, wallpaper scrolling, daily folder rotations, and live blur fills on shapes and windows.

Wallpaper Control Settings (App Wallpaper Mode)

When App wallpaper is active, the following sub-options become available:

Window & Folder Presentation Layers

When a Window or Folder opens, Total Launcher can modify underlying page elements to focus user attention on the active container.

Overlay & Focus Controls

  • Enter animation (PRO): - Sets the entry transition when a Window or Folder is invoked. Options include System default, Fast, Fade in, and 3D directional translations (From the back, From the front, From the left, From the right, From the top, From the bottom).
  • Blur behind (PRO): - Renders a live Gaussian blur across the background workspace whenever a window opens. This effect requires App wallpaper mode.
  • Blur amount (PRO): - Sets the diffusion strength of the underlying blur shader (0% to 100%).
  • Dim behind: - Darkens the underlying page layout beneath an active window to increase visual contrast.
  • Allow interaction behind window: - Enables touch pass-through to background objects while a window remains visible. If Blur behind or Dim behind is enabled, this setting is automatically bypassed to maintain modal focus.
  • Prevent window reordering: - Prevents tapping an open window from shifting its Z-index forward. This allows floating widgets or HUD (Heads Up Displays) panels to remain permanently pinned behind active modal dialogues. See a demo of HUD panels here in a Total Launcher setup

System UI Integration

This section manages the Android Status Bar (top indicator bar) and Navigation Bar (bottom button/gesture pill area)[cite: 6]:

  • Hide status bar / Hide navigation bar: - Toggles fullscreen immersive mode by suppressing system indicators.
  • Status bar background / Navigation bar background: - Sets explicit hex color fills or alpha transparencies behind the system bars using the Launcher Color Picker.
  • Dark icon on status bar / Navigation bar: - Inverts Android status bar icons to dark gray/black. Recommended when using bright or white header layouts to ensure clock and battery readability.
  • Overlap system UI: - Draws Launcher pages and canvas objects completely behind the Status and Navigation bars, making the bars transparent overlays over the home screen layout.
  • UI theme: - Sets the visual theme for Launcher dialogs and menus to Light theme, Dark theme, or System default.
  • Dynamic color scheme (Android 12+): - Integrates the Launcher with Android's dynamic theming engine (Material You).
    • How It Works: - Extracts dominant and complementary tonal swatches directly from the active wallpaper and automatically applies them across Total Launcher dialogs, menus, and the dynamic color picker tab.
    • Overriding a dynamic color scheme: - When the system-extracted palette does not match the desired aesthetic, the user can override automatic color generation by selecting explicit custom colors in the object's Dynamic color option using the Launcher's Color Picker dialog, choosing from pre-defined theme swatches, or manually remapping the primary dynamic tones.
    • Custom Dynamic Palettes: - For advanced personalization and fine-tuned control over each tonal slot, see the dedicated guide at Total Launcher Dynamic Color Guide: Material You Customization.
  • Ripple color: - Customizes the ARGB hex color and opacity of the tactile touch splash animation displayed when pressing buttons or app icons.

Page Transitions & Dynamics

Page transitions govern how screens animate during horizontal or vertical navigation swipes:

  • Animation: - Selects the spatial transition algorithm (14 available formats, including Cube, Card, Stack, Accordion, Flip, and Carousel).
  • Animation duration (ms) (PRO): - Defines transition duration in milliseconds (default is 800ms). Lower values (e.g., 250ms400ms) yield snappy responses, while higher values provide smooth, cinematic pans.
  • Animation effect (PRO): - Sets the interpolation easing curve (7 profiles available, including Linear, Accelerate, Decelerate, and Anticipate/Overshoot).
  • Invisible frame of page: - Removes the subtle outline border drawn around page boundaries during swiping to maintain seamless visual transitions.

Sliding Drawers & Gesture Navigation

Sliding Drawers provide four off-canvas containers anchored to the display's perimeter (Left, Right, Top, and Bottom). When enabled, these drawers remain hidden off-screen until pulled into view, functioning as slide-out docks, secondary app drawers, or hidden utility panels.

  • Location: Enter Edit Mode > Launcher options > UI & Animation > Sliding drawer

Edge Drawer Parameters

Setting Option Type Functional Description
On the left / right / top / bottom Toggle (PRO) Activates the respective off-canvas edge container.
Erase behind Toggle When active, erases underlying home screen objects behind the open drawer to reveal clean wallpaper through transparent container areas.

Sliding Drawer Settings

How to Open Sliding Drawers

  • Edge Swipe Gestures (Default): - Swipe inward from the corresponding bezel edge (e.g., swipe right from the left bezel to reveal the Left Drawer).
  • Drawer Handle Widgets: - Place a dedicated handle on the screen edge via Add (+) > Widget > Built-in > Drawer handle to pull open the drawer without gesture interference.
  • Object Tap Actions: - Assign any icon, shape, or transparent graphic (ARGB #00000000) to open the drawer via Object Options > Action > Tap > Launcher action > Open [left/right/top/bottom] drawer.

Resolving Android Gesture Conflicts:

Modern Android system navigation uses left- and right-edge swipes for “Back” and top-bezel swipes for the notification shade. To prevent the OS from intercepting drawer swipes, use Drawer Handle widgets or link the drawer to an on-screen button tap action.

Do's and Don'ts Best Practice Guide

  • Do configure App Wallpaper mode when building custom themes that require blurred shapes, distinct per-page wallpapers, or automated daily rotations. Because standard Android system wallpapers render outside the Launcher's graphics engine, enabling App Wallpaper gives Total Launcher direct access to the image data needed to calculate real-time Gaussian blurs, swap wallpapers per page, and automate daily image rotations.
  • Do enable Overlap System UI when designing modern edge-to-edge layouts to prevent abrupt black bars across the top and bottom of the display.
  • Do use Drawer Handle widgets or invisible tap shapes on devices with full Android gesture navigation enabled to prevent accidental triggers of the system Back gesture.
  • Don't leave animation durations above 1000ms for everyday utility pages, as long transitions slow down navigation between frequent app menus.
  • Don't combine Blur Behind and Dim Behind on lower-end devices with limited GPU resources, as multiple active blur shaders can drop rendering frame rates.
  • Don't enable Allow Interaction Behind Window if the overlying window contains interactive lists or buttons, as overlapping touch zones cause accidental clicks.
